Chapter Sixteen

Jon turned down Kendall’s street and smiled. It had been a pretty good day so far, despite the early morning wake-up call, and he figured it would only get better once he saw Kendall. Spending the day fishing with Alan turned out to be both challenging and relaxing, and not at all what he’d expected.

He glanced at the cooler on the passenger seat, filled with fresh striped bass fillets, a few jars of spices, and veggies from the farm stand at the end of his aunt’s road. He’d grilled plenty of fresh fish back in San Francisco, but never one he’d caught himself. The clerk at the liquor store on Main Street sold him two bottles of sauvignon blanc that he swore up and down would go well with striper.

A police cruiser blocked Kendall’s driveway. “What the…?” Jon backed onto the street and slammed the car into Park. He hurried up the walkway to the front porch, where Kendall stood with her arms crossed over her chest facing two uniformed officers.

“What’s going on?” Jon asked. “Ken, are you all right? Is anyone hurt?” He went to stand next to her, wanting to protect her from whatever was happening. Both officers stared at him, and Jon heard the puppy barking up a storm behind the closed door.

Kendall’s expression looked slightly dazed. “I’m fine…” she said, her voice trailing off as she dropped her arms to her sides. She straightened herself up and cleared her throat before she addressed the older of the two officers. “Thanks for stopping by, Bill. I appreciate the warning.” She stood taller and seemed to be trying to regain control of the situation. Jon wondered what had gone on while he’d been out fishing with Alan.

“I wish this wasn’t necessary.” The officer shook his head.

The guy seemed a few years older than Kendall, but the pair had an easy rapport that buffeted Jon with waves of jealousy. He tried to shake the feeling, knowing it was crazy to envy every guy who spoke to Kendall. Especially one that was obviously giving her some kind of bad news.

Kendall reached out to rest her hand on the policeman’s arm. “No, really, thanks for coming over.”

“Well, I thought you ought to know sooner rather than later. You’ve had a rough year, Ken. I don’t want to see anyone else hurt you.” He gave Jon a long and pointed look and Jon was sure he was about to get the third degree. Instead, Bill gestured for his partner to leave the porch before turning to Kendall. “Say, when’re your mom and dad headed home to the Cape? In time for the O’Brien’s annual summer party?”

Kendall nodded, a faint smile touching her lips. “They should be opening the house next month. Just in time for the Fourth of July.”

“And you’ll be there, too?”

She crossed her arms over her stomach. “Of course I will. I have a wedding that day, but I plan to stop by afterward. It’s always fun to hang out with the old crew from the neighborhood.
